D101 teaches the cost information managers use to price, plan and control. WGU assesses it with a proctored objective exam, so this shelf sets out the costing methods and analyses the exam checks.

How this shelf works

Send the exact assignment or rubric from your course of study and a custom sample written to it lands in 24 to 48 hours, the first one free. D101 is WGU’s Cost and Managerial Accounting course. It centers on how accountants measure product costs, budget, analyze cost-volume-profit relationships and compare actual results with standards. What D101 is really about

Cost and Managerial Accounting covers the concepts and procedures used to identify, collect and interpret accounting data for management control and decisions. Topics include job-order costing, process costing with equivalent units, activity-based costing, cost behavior, cost-volume-profit analysis, master budgets, standard costing with variance analysis and differential analysis for decisions such as special orders and make-or-buy.

Exam questions are mostly short problems. A typical item gives a factory's overhead rate and job data and asks for the cost of a job, or gives units started, completed and partly finished and asks for equivalent units under the weighted-average method. Break-even and target-profit questions appear often, as do variance questions that ask whether a price or quantity variance is favorable. Differential analysis items test whether a student ignores sunk costs and allocated fixed costs that will not change with the decision. Because each method follows fixed steps, practicing the steps in writing until they are automatic is the most reliable preparation.

What D101’s tasks ask for

D101 is measured by an objective exam across job and process costing, activity-based costing, cost behavior and CVP analysis, budgeting, standard costs and variances, and relevant costs for short-term decisions. Written tasks are not part of the current version.

Why D101 tasks come back for revision

Points are usually lost on equivalent units, where students forget to count partly finished work in process, and on variances, where the formula is right but the favorable or unfavorable label is reversed. In decision questions, including a sunk cost or an unavoidable fixed cost is the classic trap. A good habit is to write the direction of every variance in words, such as paid more than standard, before labeling it. Another is to cross out every cost that is the same under both options before calculating.

D101 questions, answered

Is D101 an exam course?

Yes. It is assessed by a proctored objective assessment.

What are equivalent units in D101?

Partly finished units expressed as the number of whole units of work they represent.

Why ignore sunk costs in D101 decisions?

They were spent already and do not change with the choice.
