A Sportsbook in Every Pocket: Problem Gambling Among Young Adult Men After Mobile Sports Betting Became Legal, Why It Matters to Me and What the Data Show
Introduction
In May 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal law that had kept most states from authorizing sports betting (Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2018). Within a few years, betting moved from casinos and offshore websites to phone apps that allow a wager on almost any moment of a game. This capstone examines problem gambling among young adult men in the era of legal mobile sports betting. This first paper defines the issue, explains why it matters to me personally and professionally, and summarizes what current data show about its scope and effects. A second paper will connect the issue to psychological theory and propose an evidence-based strategy.
The Psychosocial Issue
Gambling disorder is a persistent pattern of problematic gambling that leads to significant impairment or distress, recognized in the current diagnostic manual as a behavioral addiction. Problem gambling is a broader term for gambling that causes harm, such as debt, relationship conflict, missed work or school, or emotional distress, whether or not it meets diagnostic criteria. The issue is psychosocial because it sits at the meeting point of individual psychology, such as impulsivity and beliefs about skill, and social forces, including advertising, peer norms among young men and the constant availability of betting on a phone.
Mobile sports betting differs from older forms of gambling in several ways that matter psychologically. It is available at any hour, requires no travel, is tied to sports that many young men already follow with friends, and allows rapid in-game bets whose outcomes arrive within minutes. Promotions offering bonus bets to new users lower the perceived cost of starting.
Personal and Professional Connection
My interest in this issue began with my younger cousin. He started betting on basketball through an app during his sophomore year of college, first with a sign-up bonus and then with small same-game parlays. Within a year he had borrowed money from three relatives, missed rent twice and stopped answering calls from his parents. He described it to me as a hobby that got away from him. What struck me was how normal it seemed to his friends, and how little any of us knew about where to find help.
Professionally, I work as a peer recovery support specialist at a community substance use program, and I plan to pursue a master's degree in counseling. Our intake forms ask about alcohol and drugs in detail but include a single question about gambling. This capstone connects my personal experience to a gap I see at work.
What the Data Show
Participation and change among young adults. A repeated survey of Rhode Island residents aged 18 to 25, with about 1,000 respondents in each of 2022 and 2024, found that overall gambling participation did not change significantly between the two waves. Among those who gambled, however, the odds of sports betting were 1.65 times higher in 2024, app-based gambling 2.14 times higher and casino slot machine play 2.99 times higher, and the number of gambling types each person reported rose (Rosenthal et al., 2026). The authors interpreted this as a shift toward more varied and mobile gambling among young adults who already gamble, a possible sign of emerging risk.
Who is most at risk. A two-year longitudinal study of 112 American sports bettors compared people in states that legalized sports betting during the study with people in states that did not. It found no statistically significant difference in how problem gambling severity changed, but equivalence testing could not rule out a meaningful effect, leaving the true impact uncertain. Younger age and being single predicted higher problem gambling severity (Xu et al., 2025).
Effects of gambling problems. Gambling problems are associated with debt, relationship conflict, depression, anxiety and co-occurring substance use, and they often go unrecognized because, unlike alcohol or drugs, there is no visible intoxication. Among college students, studies of brief interventions have recruited samples that were mostly male, reflecting where risk tends to concentrate (Larimer et al., 2012).
Limits of the data. The research base on legal mobile sports betting is young. Most studies are recent, samples are sometimes small, and findings differ by state. The evidence does not yet show that legalization by itself increases problem gambling, but it does show that young adults are moving toward app-based betting and that younger, single bettors carry more risk.
Why the Issue Matters Now
Three features make this a pressing issue. First, access has expanded faster than research, prevention and treatment services. Second, young men, the group at highest risk, are the least likely to seek help for mental health concerns and may not see gambling as a health issue at all. Third, the harm is often hidden until debts or relationship damage become severe. Programs like the one where I work are well placed to screen for gambling problems but are not yet doing so.
The issue also affects people beyond the bettor. Partners and parents often carry the financial fallout, and some young men borrow from family or use credit cards to cover losses, which spreads the harm through households. Employers and colleges see the effects as missed shifts, falling grades and distraction, usually without knowing the cause. Because help-seeking is low, these indirect signs may be the first point at which anyone could intervene.
For all of these reasons, a strategy has to reach young men early and in settings they already use.
Conclusion
Problem gambling among young adult men is a psychosocial issue shaped by individual risk and by a new environment of constant, app-based access. Data from young adults show a shift toward mobile and sports betting among those who gamble, and longitudinal data identify younger, single bettors as most at risk, although the effect of legalization itself remains uncertain. The next paper will connect these findings to psychological theory and propose a strategy suited to young men who may not see themselves as having a problem.

What the D578 Task 1 instructions ask
The first D578 paper asks you to choose a real-world psychosocial issue and build the foundation for your capstone. WGU's program guide lists competencies that include connecting the issue to your personal or professional interests and summarizing data relevant to it; your task instructions set the exact form. Expect to define the issue, explain why it matters to you and to the field, and summarize credible data on its scope and effects, with attention to limits. The paper should prepare the ground for theory and a proposed strategy, which come later. An issue that is too broad, or data from unreliable websites, will make every later section harder.
How this D578 Task 1 example is built
The sample opens with the legal change that created the issue and states what this paper and the next will cover. The issue section defines both gambling disorder and the broader term problem gambling and explains the features of mobile betting that matter psychologically. The personal connection is brief and specific, with one story and one professional gap. The data section is organized by question: participation among young adults, who is most at risk, and known effects, each attributed to a study with its sample and design. A limits paragraph follows, and a short section explains why the issue is urgent before the conclusion previews the next paper.
Where the D578 Task 1 rubric puts the marks
Each D578 Task 1 aspect is marked competent, approaching competence or not evident according to your task rubric. Evaluators look first at whether the issue is clearly defined and genuinely psychosocial. A connection aspect asks you to link it to your personal or professional interests with enough detail to be meaningful. A data aspect checks that you summarize credible, current data on the issue's scope and effects and cite it correctly. Evaluators reward accurate descriptions of studies and honest statements of what the data cannot show. Professional writing and APA formatting, including citation of any legal or government sources, complete the scoring.
D578 Task 1 help: what sends it back
Capstone issue papers are returned most often for scope. A topic such as mental health in young people is too wide to summarize with data; narrow it by group, behavior and setting. Second, statistics without sources, or from advocacy websites, undermine the whole paper. Use peer-reviewed studies and government surveys, and describe each study's sample. Third, personal sections tend to run long. One clear story and one professional link are enough. Fourth, students often overstate findings, for example claiming a law caused a problem when the research shows only a trend. Match your wording to the evidence. Finally, write with the next paper in mind, since your theory and strategy will need to answer the problem you define here, so keep a short list of mechanisms your data suggest.

D578 Task 1 questions, answered
How do I choose a D578 capstone issue?
Pick a psychosocial issue you care about that has reliable public data and published research on interventions, then narrow it by population and setting until it can be summarized clearly.
What data sources work for D578 Task 1?
Peer-reviewed studies, national and state surveys and government reports. Describe each source's sample and design, as the sample does with a young adult survey and a longitudinal study.
How personal should the D578 connection be?
One clear personal or professional link is enough. The sample uses a relative's experience and a gap in the writer's workplace, then returns to the issue.
Is the D578 cousin in the sample real?
No. The personal story is a composite written for this sample. The court decision and the gambling studies cited in the data section are real and listed in the references.
Where can I find a free D578 Task 1 sample paper?
The complete issue and data paper is published above with notes. If your capstone topic is different, send the D578 instructions and your topic, and the desk writes your first custom version free.
