D572 Task 2 Career Action Plan and Resume Example

This D572 Task 2 example turns a career goal into a dated action plan, a targeted resume and a cover letter for a composite psychology student applying to be a psychiatric technician on an adolescent unit. In WGU D572, Career and Lifelong Learning, BS Psychology students move from choosing a goal to planning the route and building a job-search kit. The sample begins with a gap analysis drawn from eleven real-style job postings, lists each missing qualification, and answers them in a table of steps with purposes, dates and resources, from basic life support certification to volunteer hours with teenagers. The resume rewrites six years of restaurant management as outcomes a hospital values, and the cover letter ties that experience to the posting.

Twelve Months to the Unit: A Career Action Plan, Targeted Resume and Cover Letter for a Composite Psychology Student Applying to Be a Psychiatric Technician

Introduction

A career goal becomes real when it is broken into steps with dates and when the materials that carry it to an employer are ready. This paper presents a career action plan for my goal of joining a teen psychiatric unit as a technician within a year, a gap analysis comparing my current qualifications with the role's requirements, and the resume and cover letter I have prepared for a specific posting. The materials translate six years of restaurant management into terms a behavioral health employer will recognize.

Career Goal and Research Summary

Goal: a psychiatric technician job of 32 or more hours a week on an Indianapolis-area unit for teenagers, reached inside a year. The role involves monitoring patients, supporting daily activities, leading therapeutic groups and helping to de-escalate crises (National Center for O*NET Development, n.d.). Nationally, psychiatric technicians earned a median of $45,130 in May 2025, and employment in the occupation is projected to grow much faster than average through 2035 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, n.d.). Of the eleven local postings I reviewed, all required a high school diploma or higher, nine required CPR or basic life support certification, seven preferred a psychology or related degree in progress or complete, six preferred experience with adolescents, and five mentioned crisis intervention training.

Gap Analysis

Qualifications I have: psychology coursework including psychopathology, three years supervising staff, extensive experience calming upset customers, reliability and availability for evenings and weekends.

Qualifications I lack: basic life support certification, formal crisis prevention training, any direct experience with adolescents in a care setting, and a resume that presents my experience in clinical terms. I also lack professional references outside food service.

What this page is doingThe gap analysis is drawn from real job postings rather than a general idea of the job, so every step in the plan answers a specific requirement.

Action Plan

Table 1 lists each step, its purpose and target date. Steps are ordered so that early actions strengthen later ones: certifications and volunteer hours come before applications, so the resume can list them. The plan also reflects Holland's (1997) idea that satisfaction depends on the fit between a person's type and the work environment, which is why every step moves me toward direct, social care rather than administrative work.

Risks and Contingencies

Some things could slow this plan down, and each has a fallback. If no adolescent unit hires me by month 9, I will apply to adult inpatient units and transfer internally later. If volunteer placements are slow to approve, I will seek hours through a crisis text line training program. If working nights and studying proves unsustainable, I will reduce my course load for one term rather than abandon either goal.

JASMINE TATE | Indianapolis, IN | (317) 555-0186 | jasmine.tate@email.com

Profile: Psychology student and restaurant shift manager with six years of experience calming people in distress, supervising teams of up to 14 and keeping operations safe under pressure. Seeking a psychiatric technician role on an adolescent unit.

Education: Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Western Governors University, expected graduation 2028. Relevant coursework: Psychopathology, Adult Psychology, Social Psychology, Understanding Substance Abuse and Addiction.

Certifications: Basic Life Support (American Heart Association), month and year earned. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, month and year earned.

Experience: Shift Manager, family restaurant, Indianapolis, 2023 to present. De-escalated an average of three guest conflicts a week, including intoxicated and verbally aggressive guests, without police involvement. Trained and supervised 14 staff per shift, including 22 new hires in 2025. Maintained safety and cleanliness standards with zero critical findings in three health inspections. Server and Trainer, 2020 to 2023: selected to train new servers after one year.

Volunteer: Youth Mentor, neighborhood youth center, 2026 to present. Mentor two middle school students weekly, supporting homework and conflict resolution.

Skills: Crisis de-escalation, active listening, documentation, team leadership, scheduling software, conversational Spanish.

What this page is doingThe resume leads with a profile aimed at the target job and rewrites restaurant duties as outcomes a hospital values, such as conflicts de-escalated and staff trained. A general food-service resume would not meet the aspect on materials for the job application process.

Cover Letter

Dear Hiring Manager, I am applying for the Psychiatric Technician position on the Adolescent Unit at Lakeview Behavioral Hospital. For the past three years I have managed evening shifts at a busy restaurant, where my most important job has not been running the floor but calming people when they are at their worst. I have learned to lower my voice when others raise theirs, to give people choices when they feel cornered, and to notice when someone is about to escalate. Your posting describes a technician who can maintain a safe, therapeutic environment and support patients during crises; I have practiced those skills every weekend, and I have now added formal training in nonviolent crisis intervention and basic life support.

I am completing a bachelor's degree in psychology, and my coursework in psychopathology and substance use has given me a foundation for understanding the young people on your unit. My interest is also personal. When my younger brother was hospitalized on an adolescent unit, the patience his technicians showed changed how our whole family came through that time. I would welcome the chance to offer that same steadiness to your patients. I am available for evening, night and weekend shifts and can start within two weeks of an offer. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Jasmine Tate

Conclusion

This plan converts a career goal into dated steps drawn from real job requirements, anticipates setbacks and produces application materials that present restaurant leadership as preparation for clinical work. Each step builds on the last, so by the time applications go out, the resume will show the certifications and adolescent experience that employers in this field ask for.

What the D572 Task 2 instructions ask

The second D572 task generally asks for two things: a career action plan and application materials. The plan should state your goal, compare your current qualifications with what the target role requires, and list the steps, timeline and resources that close the gap. The materials usually include a resume and a cover letter tailored to a specific job posting or role type. Some versions add a professional online profile or references. The plan and the materials should agree with each other; if the plan says you will earn a certification in month one, the resume can list it. Generic documents that could be sent to any employer tend to miss the aspect on materials for the job application process.

How this D572 Task 2 example is built

The sample opens by restating the goal and summarizing job-posting research as counts, such as nine of eleven postings asking for life support certification. A two-part gap analysis lists what the writer has and what is missing. The action plan is a table with eight rows, ordered so certifications and volunteer hours come before applications. A short section names three risks and a fallback for each. The resume leads with a profile aimed at the target job, then education, certifications, experience written as results and volunteer work. The cover letter opens with the writer's most relevant skill, connects it to the posting's language, adds a personal reason for the field and closes with availability.

Where the D572 Task 2 rubric puts the marks

D572 Task 2 aspects are rated in sequence as competent, approaching competence or not evident. A planning aspect looks for a goal supported by research, a clear comparison of current and required qualifications and specific steps with dates and resources. A materials aspect checks that the resume and cover letter are professional, error-free and tailored to the target role. Some versions score the connection between the plan and the materials separately. Evaluators also read for realism: timelines that ignore work and school rarely convince. Professional formatting and correct citation of any career data used are part of the scoring as well.

D572 Task 2 help: what sends it back

Action plans come back most often because the steps are not tied to real requirements. Read several job postings and count what they ask for; the sample's gap analysis comes straight from that count. Second, timelines are often too vague. Give each step a month or a date and a resource. Third, resumes are rarely tailored. Rewrite duties as results that the new field values, such as conflicts de-escalated or staff trained, and put the most relevant items first. Fourth, cover letters often repeat the resume. Use the letter to explain why you want this role and how your experience fits the posting's language. Finally, proofread everything twice, since spelling errors in application materials are hard for an evaluator to overlook.
